Haley May,
Type 1 Diabetes Patient
From Haley's dad,
Don May, Sr. Vice President/City Executive Tallahassee, FL.:
"Haley was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in June of 2007. After her diagnosis, Haley decided she wanted to raise awareness about Diabetes in general. She was selected to participate in the American Diabetes Association’s 2008 Call To Congress, to lobby members of the US Congress regarding Diabetes legislation. During that trip, we all learned that out of every child born in the US in the year 2000, 33% will develop Type 2 Diabetes, due to weight, diet, and lack of physical exercise; this is an overwhelming number, that does not have to happen. Unlike the Type 1 that Haley has, Type 2 can be virtually eliminated in children and drastically reduced in the adult population by paying attention to diet, controlling weight, and getting exercise. Haley started a car wash in 2008 to raise money for research for the American Diabetes Association; that car wash has raised almost $13,000 and has become an annual event. The next car wash is scheduled for May 1, 2010 at our Metropolitan office."
